1532
In 1532, the shroud suffered damage from a fire in the Saint-Chapelle Chapel in Chambery, France. It had been moved to Chambery in 1453 by its current owner, Louis of Savoy. Burns to the cloth which resulted from molten silver from the reliquary or broken portions of the reliquary’s lid produced a symmetrically-placed mark through the layers of the folded cloth. Poor Clare Nuns attempted to repair this damage with patches. There are also a number of water stains caused by the extinguishing of the fire.
