Complexity in the Shroud Image
The notion of complexity plays significantly when it comes to the Shroud. We see, among some proponents of authenticity, two arguments. The first is that the image is too complex to have been produced by a faker or relics or an artist. To some extent this is reasonable. From what we know about artistic techniques throughout history we can readily see that this seems to be so. But it doesn’t rule out some yet undiscovered, very sophisticated form of art.
The second argument is that because the images are so complex they can’t be explained except by resorting to a miraculous explanation. The problem is that it rules out some yet unexplained natural phenomenon. For instance, Rogers, as we will see in more detail, thinks that a natural explanation is probably the most likely scenario.
