Those of us who know better probably know that the Pythagoreans, as early as the 5^th century B.C. recognized that the world was round. Aristotle, Euclid, and others knew it too.  In the 2^nd century A.D., an entire school of astronomers and mathematicians in Alexandria, led by Ptolemy, knew the earth was round and even calculated the circumference of the earth with a surprisingly high degree of accuracy.
