Artificial Light
A computer generated image such as our teapot includes a simulation of reflected light, introduced artificially so that our brain, which is very good at this sort of thing, can interpret a sense of three-dimensionality. As with a real photograph or a painting the appearance of light has nothing to do with apparent proximity to you, the observer or the surface of the computer screen.
The teapot is an example of a complete object that can be virtually suspended in space. With software it can be rotated this way and that just at a modeled earth can be by flipping North or South or rotating it on the equator. It can be made to fly across the screen and even cast a shadow on the earth.
