Lambert, is better known for demonstrating that pi is an irrational number. Pi isn’t something that most of us use very often unless we wish to show that a large size pizza, which is only two inches wider than a small size pizza has twice as many calories. When we say that pi—3.14 or 3.1416 or 3.1415926535—is irrational it means that no matter how many decimal points we calculate for it we can always calculate one more, if we have a mind to do so. I once met a man who spent the entirety of World War II trying to add two more decimal places to pi in an attempt to improve the accuracy of bomb sights. Today, with an ordinary personal computer one can calculate pi to a billion decimal places in less than a month. Doing so demonstrates that not only is pi irrational but so too are some people.
Lambert noticed that light reflected from a surface, even a dark colored surface, sometimes appears white or much lighter than the real color of the surface. He noticed that it had everything to do with the angle of the light, the angle of the surface, reflectivity, how diffused the light, as on a cloudy day, and nothing whatsoever to do with the proximity of the observer.
