A Year of Celebration
The year 1898 was a time for great celebration in Turin. The city was to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Turin’s Duomo di San Giovanni Battista: the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. At the same time, Italy was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sardinian Statuto Albertino, the constitution that was now the framework for Italy’s legal system. As part of the celebration, there was to be an exhibition of holy art. To promote the exhibition, Baron Manno petitioned the king for a public display of the shroud and requested permission for Secondo Pia to photograph it as a way to promote the art exhibition. King Umberto agreed.
