In 1898, the most famous photograph was a group photo by the New York Herald’s William Dinwiddie of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders after their famous charge against Spanish forces entrenched on San Juan Hill in Cuba. The second most famous photograph was the Shroud of Turin taken by an Italian amateur photographer named Secondo Pia. It was a photograph that would launch a new era of shroud research in both science and history. Both pictures were published in newspapers. Both pictures got considerable attention. Pia’s would get more attention in the years that followed.
