The Negative in Photography
William Fox Talbot is generally given the credit for developing the negative-positive process that, until the invention of digital photography, dominated photography. Fox’s negative was a sheet of sensitized paper. Exposed to light reflected from a subject, a negative image was produced on the paper after it was chemically developed. The paper negative was then placed over another piece of sensitized paper and light was shown through it creating a negative of the negative: a positive image.
