Just in time for Holy Week in 2009, newspapers all over the world reported that a researcher in the Vatican Secret Archives, Barbara Frale, had discovered a document describing the testimony of a French Templar who had entered the Knights’ monastic order in 1287. As part of an initiation rite he was taken to “a secret place to which only the brothers of the Temple had access.” He was shown “a long linen cloth on which was impressed the figure of a man” and told to venerate it by kissing its feet three times.
Was this the same cloth that surfaced in Lirey in the 1350s?
